Day 8: Bosnia Herzegovina

We got up early to take a small group tour to a couple sites in Bosnia Herzegovina.  The trip there was stunning.

This is Neum--Bosnia Herzegovina's only seaside town.  We then turned inland and stopped at Kravice Waterfalls. I took a zillion photos, but here's one.

I also was able to get a shot of this dude on the railing.

We then set out for Mostar, with tons of vineyards and old cities along the way.

Mostar is a mix of Muslim Bosniaks, Eastern Orthodox Serbs, and Catholic Croats.  It's beautiful now with lots of restoration after the devastating destruction during the breakup of Yugoslovia and all the ethnic conflicts.  Here is a photo of the restored Mostar bridge and what it looked like during the war.  To the right is the Muslim side and the left is Christian side.

We ran across two enthusiastic young men on the Muslim side of town who started a museum--BosnaSeum which documented the muslim/Ottoman influence in Bosnia and what happened during the war.

So we had mix of a lovely town with the backdrop of horrible conflict.

In the evening we went to a sushi bar on a street that looked like it was straight out of Games of Thrones.  BTW, the sushi was the best we've had in a long time.

We had a great waiter who treated us to a cherry liquor.  We asked to look at the bottle and he said there wasn't one.  There are thousands of families who ferment fruit all over the country.

On the way out of the restaurant, this guy was guarding the stairway.
